Goudsmit places great importance on reliability; our magnetic systems meet the promised specifications. We have been developing and selling magnetic systems since 1959, so we have a wealth of knowledge and experience to draw upon. To provide exact specifications and guarantees, we heed the motto: to measure is to know! Some of the many ways we collect the required data include:

Magnetic measurements on basic magnets

The following are some examples of measuring devices we use to capture all data the that are relevant for us and our customers. The result is greater and more rapid insight into the characteristics and behaviour of a product in a certain environment or assembly.

We use a 3D coordinate measuring machine (CMM) to perform 3D measurements on magnets and non-magnetic materials with the aid of a scanning sensor.

Using our magnetization unit we can magnetize unmagnetized magnets to full saturation. This is, however, limited to the maximum dimensions of our coils and the desired shape of the magnetic field.

Test centre Recycling / Handling / Separation

Why a test centre?

Find the best solution for your problem: in the updated test centre we conduct tests on both our own products and yours to determine which system would be most suitable. We are happy to work with you to develop custom magnetic systems.

For optimization of our product range: all the test results from the test centre are fed into a database which now contains many years' worth of valuable, real world information. This database is growing by the day and serves as an important source of input for product optimization of our magnetic systems. This knowledge enables us to develop more precisely what is needed and provide you with more detailed advice.


Which product groups are tested?


In the interest of serving the recycling industry, the test centre includes our entire range of recycling machines. Here, for example, you will find not only our Eddy Current separators and vibratory chutes but also robust magnetic separators and drum magnets, head rollers and overbelt conveyors, and combinations thereof. It is therefore possible to process bulk samples of all your materials, from coarse to very fine.

In our test centre we test all our magnetic separators for separation yields, flow optimization and cleanability as well as for service life and ease of use. Send us a sample of your product and we will investigate how much iron contamination it contains and which magnetic separator is best for your situation.

Handling / lifting

Our test centre contains all the equipment necessary for testing our magnetic handling systems. This includes performing durability tests (service life) and measuring the force exerted by our lifting magnets in all sorts of situations.

Many factors must be considered when it comes to the quick, safe magnetic handling/lifting of products. In order to leave nothing to chance, we can simulate many situations in our test centre to ensure that the magnetic systems we develop are safe.

Conveyor systems

Our magnetic conveyor systems are almost always made to order. To develop the most optimal system for you, we have every possible magnetic and conveyor component available in our test centre so we can put together a test setup. Magnetic calculations

The basis for choosing the correct magnet

In addition to conducting measurements and tests, over the years we have invested in software for magnetic calculations based on the 'Finite Elements Method (FEM)'. This ensures that we can develop the right magnet faster and better, for a new or existing product. This saves valuable time during the development process and ensures the proper operation of your product. These magnets are used in various devices, such as:

  • control units for navigation;
  • car phones;
  • control buttons for household appliances, such as ovens and microwaves;
  • high-tech applications, such as linear drives for position determination at high speed;
  • magnet systems, such as magnetic grippers for handling sheet metal, magnetic filters in the food industry or metal recycling machines.

Magnetic performance can be efficiently optimized with magnet calculations. The high prices of magnetic material such as neodymium make it all the more important to optimize use of the magnets.
This allows us to accurately predict how the magnet will behave in terms of:

  • depth of the magnetic field;
  • peaks and valleys in the magnetic field over a surface;
  • maximum power of the magnet on another (ferromagnetic) object;
  • 'residual magnetism' present when on and off (for switchable magnets);
  • separation of particles from a product flow (e.g. powder or chocolate flow).

With our years of experience we are able to accurately predict the effects of many previously uncertain factors in the simulations and thus optimize our products.

Once we have a clear definition of the customer's problem, our experts can get started, on the basis of a pre-agreed step-by-step plan. They use specially developed software to determine which magnet will enable your sensor, drive or product to function as desired. Moreover, we can simulate and theoretically underpin the solution, and validate the performance, based on magnet measurements. These measurements plus the quality controls we perform provide you with the assurance that you will receive a product that meets the required specifications. In addition to ISO 9001, Goudsmit is also an ISO/TS 16949- and AS9100c-certified company, so our magnets meet the strict requirements of the automotive and aerospace industries.

Real-world performance

To ensure the magnet functions over a certain distance, just knowing the flux density is not enough. The magnetic performance depends on additional factors, such as:

  • how it is mounted (horizontally or vertically);
  • thickness of the steel present (ferromagnetic object);
  • presence of magnetic materials in the surrounding area that affect the magnetic field;
  • distance from the magnet to a ferromagnetic object;
  • the speed and viscosity of a product flow that contains the particles to be separated.
